HANDSPUN TEXTILES BY THE WOMEN IN THE HIGHLANDS OF CHIAPAS

01/

In 1995 Italian-born Maddalena Forcella co-founded a non-profit association in Chiapas, hosting textile and natural dye workshops. Along with the help of partner Marie Farneth this eventually led her to build Oaxaca-based, Madda Studio. Madda honors and celebrates the full lifecycle of handspun wool. With contemporary creations that champion the traditional artisan technique of weaving and felting. The results are stunning, layered pieces that can only truly be appreciated in hand.

Using the untreated wool of the Chiapa Sheep, the dynamic process brings to life a family of textiles from rugs and throws to pillows which start with the support of over 60 indigenous women in the highlands of Chiapas using pre-Hispanic drop spindles. Maddalena then oversees the color process using natural dyes derived from plants, bark, flowers and the Cochineal insect. Finally the wool is handed off to master weavers in Oaxaca and Chiapas to finish the pieces on pedal looms.
